I was born and grew up in Ireland ,in an area noted for the breeding of thoroughbreds - a good start to life!
New Zealand beckoned in an unexpected and surprising way so I journeyed the 13,000 km specifically to join the New Zealand Dominican Sisters. After many years of teaching and administration in schools, during which time I was involved in adult literacy and the I.R.A. (International Reading Association!), I spent seven years as a Parish Pastoral Assistant. This, together with participating in a Dominican Formators' Course in the Philippines, heightened my awareness of the ‘gymnastics' of language and the difficulties experienced by English Speakers of Other Languages, eventually leading to my involvement with refugees and asylum seekers as an English Language tutor. I really enjoy being with people of different cultural backgrounds and consider myself blessed to have the opportunity of working with them.
My overall interest is in education as the key to life-long learning, through developing skills which enable students to get the best out of learning opportunities provided, encouraging and equipping them to succeed so that their lives may be enriched through their learning. I see this as my role at Good Shepherd College .
Reading, music, plant propagation and the great outdoors all hold significant space in my life. My interest in music finds an outlet in the Samoan Community Choir and the Young People's Choir in our parish, and I have what might be classified as a theory, that working with plant life is a great way of keeping my feet on the ground and my mind in the heavens. Sounds like a model of Good Shepherd College!
