Liturgical Studies Courses

LS170 - Catholic Liturgical Foundations
LS220 - Preaching 1
LS371 - Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments

LS170
Catholic Liturgical Foundations
Teacher: M Young

This course unit serves as the foundational unit for liturgical study, introducing students to the sources and traditions that underpin the development of the Western or Latin (Roman) liturgy, key documents of the Second Vatican Council on ministry and worship and their application, and the sacramental life of the Church that forms the kernel of liturgical life.

NZQA NQF Level 5 (15 credits)

LS220
Preaching 1
Teacher: S Sellar

This unit is designed to give students the knowledge and skills needed to integrate theological, biblical and pastoral studies for effective liturgical preaching. Students will also be expected to analyse the place of preaching in the liturgy of the Word and to demonstrate individual skills in presenting well-constructed liturgical homilies. The course aims to have students value the discipline of homily preparation and delivery as an important pastoral work for the flourishing of Grace in both the community and the preacher. We advise that students taking this course should already have a solid grounding in Systematic Theology and Biblical Studies.

NZQA NQF Level 6 (15 credits)

LS371
Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments
Teacher: M Young

In this course unit, the theology of worship is given full rein. In it are discussed the nature and power of the liturgical symbol and the dynamism of the liturgical structure to create meaning.  The Course, then, looks at the challenge to liturgical language posed by post-modernism, and concludes with a detailed description and understanding of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults as the paradigm of Christian evangelization in its interplay of catechesis, companionship, the on-going task of conversion and their relationship with the liturgy.
